A Guy’s Guide to Buying the Perfect Engagement Ring

Getting married is a sacred thing, but there are some obstacles that must be overcome before taking a walk down the aisle. For a guy, proposing is one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome, yet it is not as difficult as buying a suitable engagement ring. Most men could benefit from a helpful guide on buying the perfect engagement ring.

Many guys are stomped by simple questions, such as: What’s the difference between a wedding ring and an engagement ring? When is it appropriate to purchase each of the rings? How much should I spend on an engagement ring? How do I know which ring is better? These initial questions make buying an engagement ring extremely confusing.

First, it is important to understand that a wedding ring and an engagement ring are two different kinds of rings. It is commonly misconceived that buying an engagement-wedding ring combination, known as a bridal set is best. However, this is not a good idea, as the fiancé may be unsatisfied with both of the rings, and the bridal sets may have higher prices than both of the individual rings together.

Some men may even find it helpful to bring the future bride shopping with them. Shopping for an engagement ring with their fiancé should help some guys find the perfect engagement ring that fits to her finger. However, the proposal of marriage is usually a surprise, so most guys may be better off shopping alone.

Most men may find it appropriate to bring a friend. It is important to bring a friend of hers that knows her well, preferably her best friend. Best friends will be more informed on what rings are most appropriate and what rings a woman would like the most. A friend of the future bride will also be able to pick out what rings she admires most, and what rings she may not like at all.

It may also be helpful to choose a stone and a ring separately. The best value can be found in a diamond with high color and cut, and low clarity. Checking the diamond for any visible inclusions using the jeweler’s loupe before purchasing it may also is helpful.

The size of the ring is also an important factor to consider. Her ring size must be obtained before the ring can be purchased, because the wrong ring size may ruin the gesture. Using one of their fiancé’s existing rings as a sample of what size ring should be purchased may be best for many men.

Buying an engagement ring is a financial promise, so it is important to plan the maximum budget for buying the ring. If the budget is low, it may be best to choose a diamond with more surface area, which will give the appearance of being big. It may also be smart to ask for diamonds that are slightly less than the next carat, such as buying a 0.8-carat ring instead of a 1.0-carat diamond ring.

Quality rings are costly and require a significant investment, and must be considered before purchasing an engagement ring. However, quality rings are available at reasonable costs. Negotiating with the jeweler is the best way to ensure that a quality ring will be obtained. Many jewelers are willing to negotiate prices based on the color, cut, and clarity of the diamond rings.

Getting a quality jeweler is the next step; the best jewelers usually have the smallest shops, and are more personal than national chains. The jeweler’s store should be accredited by the Jewelers of America or the jeweler should be a member of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). It is important to do initial research before the purchase, and to obtain insurance and a return policy after the purchase.

The most important step in buying an engagement ring is being prepared. Before buying the ring, the man must save his money, find the perfect stone and setting, and have any custom engraving done. Buying is a long and complicated process that cannot be done in a few hours or even a few days.
